About SHADE!

SHADE® Foundation of America is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Tax ID #: 22 - 3879992

Mission: To eradicate melanoma through the education of children and the community in the prevention and detection of skin cancer and the promotion of sun safety.

Established: 2002 after President and Founder Shonda Schilling’s very public battle with malignant melanoma

Ten Year Goals:

  • Create 10 million hours of SHADE (100% accomplished and climbing!)
  • Educate 100,000 children in sun safety (95% accomplished)
  • 306 million awareness impressions, one for every American (continuously improving on a 50% mark)

Impact:

  • 150+ SHADE covers providing a million hours of shade for each cover put up.  During SHADE Foundation’s first ten years, the number of shade covers put up equates to nearly 200 million hours of shade.
  • 97,000 children have drawn posters about sun safety through our nationwide poster contest and it is estimated that an additional 90% of school children received some form of sun safety education.
  • 30,000 people have participated in “Limit the Sun, Not the Fun” programs to provide additional shade for children during the day’s highest UV radiation, between the hours of 10am and 4pm during the summer school break.

Awareness:

  • Public service announcements provide sun safety awareness to children and the communities across the country.
  • Window to the World of Skin Cancer at Rockefeller Center in New York City
  • Fashion Journal “Healthy Skin is Always in Fashion” men’s and women’s ad campaign
  • “Watch Your Skin” billboards in Massachusetts.
  • Helped pass legislation with Gov. Janet Napolitano (AZ) to make Arizona the first SunWise state
  • SHADE and HealthiNation produced an award winning skin cancer self-exam video showing on our website and on-demand through HealthiNation and several cable companies nationwide.

 Honors:

  • Congressional Families Award
  • Helios Award
  • 3 American Academy of Dermatology Gold Triangle Awards

Major Associations: Member of National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, United States Environmental Protection Agency
