Mission: To eradicate melanoma through
the education of children and the community in the
prevention and detection of skin cancer and the promotion
of sun safety.
Established: 2002
after President and Founder Shonda Schilling’s
very public battle with malignant melanoma
Ten Year Goals:
- Create 10 million hours of SHADE (100% accomplished
and climbing!)
- Educate 100,000 children in sun safety (95% accomplished)
- 306 million awareness impressions, one for every
American (continuously improving on a 50% mark)
Impact:
- 150+ SHADE covers providing a million
hours of shade for each cover put up. During SHADE Foundation’s
first ten years, the number of shade covers put up
equates to nearly 200 million hours of shade.
- 97,000 children have drawn posters about sun safety
through our nationwide poster contest and it is estimated
that an additional 90% of school children received
some form of sun safety education.
- 30,000 people have participated
in “Limit
the Sun, Not the Fun” programs to provide
additional shade for children during the day’s
highest UV radiation, between the hours of 10am and
4pm during the summer school break.
Awareness:
- Public service announcements provide
sun safety awareness to children and the communities
across the country.
- Window to the World of Skin Cancer at Rockefeller
Center in New York City
- Fashion Journal “Healthy Skin is
Always in Fashion” men’s and women’s
ad campaign
- “Watch Your Skin” billboards
in Massachusetts.
- Helped pass legislation with Gov. Janet Napolitano
(AZ) to make Arizona the first SunWise state
- SHADE and HealthiNation produced an award winning
skin cancer self-exam video showing on our website
and on-demand through HealthiNation and several cable
companies nationwide.
