About Our Runners

I am running the Boston Marathon because I am a Melanoma survivor. Running with the Shade Foundation allows me to share my experience and educate others about skin cancer. As a mother of 3 very fair-skinned children, I want them to learn about how to protect themselves from the sun at an early age and avoid something that is so preventable. I hope to be a be a role model for them (and others) and teach them you don't need to fear or worship the sun, just respect it.

All of us have been touched by cancer at one point in our lives. The National Cancer Institute predicts that 1,444,920 Americans were diagnosed with cancer in 2007, and that 559,650 Americans died of cancer in 2007.

That statistic is frightening, but it becomes all too real when it hits us individually. For me, that came when my uncle and role model, Francois Gerin, recently succumbed to cancer at the age of 60. That, more than any statistic, was the wake up call to me about the very real and personal tragedy that cancer is.

On April 21, 2008, with your help, I will do my part to relegate cancer to the history books, when I run the Boston Marathon to raise money for the SHADE Foundation of America in memory of my uncle. SHADE's mission is to eradicate melanoma by educating children and the community in the prevention and detection of skin cancer and the promotion of sun safety.
