May 2010 event information

One million people will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer this year!!!  Early detection is important and it is the mission of SHADE® Foundation of America to eradicate melanoma through the education of children and the community in the prevention and detection of skin cancer and the promotion of sun safety.  We would like to invite you to participate in our second annual Sunset Run for SHADE event — we are hosting a  5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Family Fun Run on Friday, May 14, 2010 in the Scottsdale Stadium!  The details are listed below.  We hope you can join us and bring your family and/or a team to “outrun skin cancer”!!

SHADE Foundation staff manned water station 7 with Arrowhead Health and had a great time cheering on the runners as we handed out water.

Shonda Schilling and Peg Morandini wives of two baseball greats are running the 2009 Chicago Marathon in support of SHADE Foundation! Please help support them in their goal of raising $30,000  by making a donation on this page.

SHADE currently has spots available in all three marathons. Athletes who run as part of the SHADE Marathon Team are required to raise a minimum of $3,500 for New York and $1,000 for Chicago and PF Chang’s in support of SHADE’s mission.

Event Description

The kick off breakfast was hosted by Shonda Schilling and attended by our supporters at Killer Shade, Brittney Shipp from 3TV who will be running the half marathon for SHADE and runner from all over the valley.

Highlights included a presentation to the State of Arizona poster contest winner Hannah.

When I was young, most people were in the dark when it came to realizing the dangers of excessive sun exposure. I’ve paid the price with numerous biopsies, surgeries, and cancer diagnoses. I am a malignant melanoma survivor.

About one million Americans develop skin cancer each year and the melanoma diagnosis growth rate is staggering as well. When kids blister or burn after being in the sun, trouble may loom in their future. The Schillings’ Shade Foundation shines a light on this important matter. The wonderful people in this organization teach our children about prevention and construct shades on American playgrounds, providing basic protection from the harmful radiation.

On January 18th, 2009, I will slather on the sunscreen and run 26.2 miles in the PF Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon to raise awareness for this cause as well as funds for SHADE. With your help, we will save many, many lives.

On January 19th 2009, I will be running in the Phoenix PF Chang’s Marathon for an important cause. I will be running to support the SHADE Foundation and help to create more awareness about skin cancer. I have made this commitment to bring more knowledge about Melanoma to my children, family and friends, and in hopes everyone will recognize the significance of understanding what skin cancer is and how to prevent the number of cases that occur each year.

Phoenix is also known as the “Valley of the Sun”; and as a native of Arizona I know what the sun can do to those who worship it as I did when I was a teenager. To get that golden tan I would apply baby oil to my skin to create sunburns; now, years later I know what it is like to have to deal with a diagnosis of skin cancer. For this reason I want to educate my children on what the sun can do to beautiful skin. The sun is wonderful to feel on the skin and should be enjoyed, but it should be done with respect for what can happen if the sun rays are not absorbed in moderation and with protection.

The sun is full of warmth and healing energy, yet at the same time it can also be deadly. That is why I will continue to remind those I care for to take heed and protect themselves from the sun’s rays.

The Schillings SHADE Foundation is a wonderful organization that raises awareness to help prevent and educate about melanoma. It also helps to alert our children about “sun education” along with their efforts to provide shade protection on playgrounds.
