Can you recommend a doctor?
Answer:

SHADE Foundation of America cannot direct you to any specific medical care. Please click on the “Medical Resources” tab at the top of the page and then go to dermatologists. You can search for one in your location.

 

Question:
How can I make a contribution?
Answer:

You may send a check to the “SHADE Foundation of America”, 10510 North 92nd Street, Suite 100, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. You can also donate online by clicking on the “donate” menu.

 

Question:
What are the three types of skin cancer?
Answer:

The three primary types of skin cancer are Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma.

Question:
What are the early warning signs (ABCD’s)?
Answer:

A – Asymmetry - common moles are round and symmetrical.
B – Border – skin cancers may have uneven borders.
C – Color – watch for varied shades of brown, tan, red, black or blue.
D – Diameter – width greater than six millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser). Watch for any growth of moles.

Question:
Are there funds available to help people with skin cancer?
Answer:

SHADE Foundation of America’s mission does not allow us to give money to individuals. Check with your local cancer society and dermatological association for local free screenings. Also check with your state health agency to see if there are funds available for treatment.

 

Question:
How much sunscreen should I apply?
Answer:

The rule is one teaspoon full per arm, one table spoon for the torso, a teaspoon for the face and a teaspoon from foot to knee and one from knee to hip per leg. Remember to apply before you go outside and approximately every two hours thereafter.

 

Question:
What does SPF mean?
Answer:

Sun Protection Factor measures the length of time a product protects against skin reddening from UVB, compared to how long the skin takes to redden without protection.

 

Question:
Are tanning parlors safer than the sun?
Answer:

Tanning beds emit UV radiation. Any tanning indicates damage to the skin.

Question:
Can UV rays pentrate the window glass in cars and at home?
Answer:

Yes they do. Windows and car windshields somewhat reduce exposure to UVB radiation. Only car windshield are partially treated against UVA rays. Consider wearing sunscreen when driving or the use of UV protective window film.

 

Question:
How is skin cancer diagnosed?
Answer:

Diagnosis begins with a thorough examination from a doctor. If a lesion is removed it must be diagnosed through pathology.

What can I do to help?
Answer:

Please visit the “Support and Events” tab and click on Events. You can view the “Rules and Guidelines” of having your own “SHADE” event. You can get some ideas for your own event by visiting "Past Events" as well.
