Golfers Tee Up for SHADE

As the daughter of a dermatologist, I grew up with a strong message about sun safety and the dangers of melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer. I knew to slather myself in sunscreen, wear protective hats and clothes, avoid tanning booths, and seek out the shade, especially between the sun’s peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. But these guidelines never held much personal meaning until I met my husband, Jim, and learned that his father, Phillips R. Geraghty, died of melanoma in 1997. Phil was an avid golfer, and just a few precautions during his weekly round of 18 holes - a wide-brimmed hat, a long-sleeve shirt, and sunscreen to accompany his plaid pants - might have helped save his life.

Jim and I founded the Phillips R. Geraghty Memorial Golf Tournament in 2006 to encourage other golfers to be diligent about protecting their skin and to raise money for SHADE Foundation of America. The inaugural tournament and silent auction, held at the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course, drew 20 golfers from across the United States and four other nations, and raised $8,500 to help erect a shade structure to protect a playground for special needs children at Canyon Road Elementary School in Peoria, Arizona.

The second annual Phillips R. Geraghty Memorial Tournament - which will be featured in the May/June issue of Golf For Women magazine - will take place on April 14, 2007, at Bear’s Best Golf Course in Las Vegas. There, we hope to raise $10,000 for SHADE Foundation. For more information about the tournament or to make a donation, visit www.shadefoundation.org. In our efforts to help prevent melanoma, Jim and I hope to make both of our fathers proud. - LAUREL NAVERSEN GERAGHTY

SHADE Foundation of America

SHADE Foundation of America is proud to be the beneficiary of the Second Annual Phillips R. Geraghty Memorial Golf Tournament.

Purpose The 2007 Phillips R. Geraghty Memorial Golf Tournament will increase awareness about skin cancer risk to children and the community. We are pleased to be a part of this exciting event in Nevada. The southwest has some of the highest incidence rates of skin cancer in the world. The leading cause of skin cancer is unprotected exposure to ultra-violet light from the sun.

Skin cancer is a highly preventable disease.
Protecting children today can help save their lives tomorrow!

Our Mission To eradicate melanoma through the education of children and the community, in the prevention and detection of skin cancer, and the promotion of sun safety.
About us Support and donations in 2005-6 enabled us to fund thirty (30) SHADE cover grants to schools and community organizations, provide sun safety education to more than 100,000 school children, and conduct more than 5,000 free skin cancer screenings at health fairs and community events.

In 2007-2008, we plan to expand our programs by reaching out to more children and communities with our programs to increase awareness about skin cancer risk and prevention through screenings, on-demand self-examination video, and SHADE cover grants. For more information, please visit www.shadefoundation.org.

Donations Thanks to generous sponsors like you, SHADE Foundation raised more than $695,000 last year at events and activities across the nation. We need your help to make this happen. Please join us to help prevent skin cancer and save lives by becoming a participant or sponsor of the 2007 Phillips R. Geraghty Memorial Golf Tournament

Your donation or financial support of SHADE Foundation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. With your support, we can help save future generations.

Outcome of the 2006 Tournament

The Sunflower Playground Renovation was completed and opened on May 12, 2006. Peoria Unified School District recently contacted SHADE Foundation about the outcome:

“It is impossible to measure the tremendous impact this playground has made to the lives of our special needs’ students. All of the things we had hoped for and envisioned have happened and more. Our students have a beautiful, functional, wheelchair accessible playground where they can experience the joy of being outside… playing, sharing lunch, talking and making friends. This playground is a very special place to be, filled with the energy of children who know what it is to struggle, to overcome and to become life’s little miracles.

A simple “thank you” seems inadequate but please know how very grateful we are for everything that you as a donor, have done to support this project. You have left a tremendous legacy that will continue to benefit all of our very special children for years to come.” ---- Peoria Unified School District

SKIN CANCER: THE SERIOUS FACTS

  • Rates of detection of melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer – are rising and account for the highest number of cancer deaths among particularly among young women (aged 25-29 years) and affect all racial and ethnic groups.
  • Melanoma accounts for more than 75% of skin cancer deaths.
  • It is projected that one person will die every hour from skin cancer.
  • It’s estimated that about 1.3 million new skin cancers will be diagnosed in the United States during 2007
  • Since 1973, the mortality rate for melanoma has increased by 50%.
  • Today, one child in five will grow up to develop skin cancer.
  • Two or more sunburns under the age of 18 years can increase the chance of acquiring skin cancer by 50%.

THE SILVER LINING: SKIN CANCER IS EASILY PREVENTABLE

  • Sun Exposure: Reduce sun exposure between 10AM and 4:00PM
  • Protective Clothing: When in the sun, wear long-sleeved protective clothing, sunglasses, and a broad-brim hat
  • Sunscreen: Use only broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. SPF only tells you how much protection from UVB (the “burning” rays) the product provides. For protection against UVA (the aging rays”) look for sunscreen, that contains at least 5% Zinc Oxide. Apply at least once every two hours
  • Year round: UVA rays are constant throughout the year. Sunscreen should be worn when it’s cloudy and in every season
  • Self Examinations: check your skin each month for abnormal moles or sun spots
  • Check ups: Visit your dermatologist once a year for a complete body screening
