Grants and Programs your money at work, is the back-bone
of The Shade Foundation’s Mission to eradicate melanoma through
the education of children and the community in the prevention and
detection of skin cancer and the promotion of sun safety. Whether
its $25 or $25,000, every dollar will make a difference in someone’s
life.
| SHADE Structure
Grant Program
As of Spring 2005 The Shade Foundation has
provided over 40 shade structures. To schools and recreation
parks. Our school shade cloth structures can provide blockage
of up to 97% of the sun’s UV rays, yet allows air to
ventilate, preventing heat build. The perfect playground playmate. |

| SHADE Middle/High
School Program
Project S.A.F.E.T.Y. (Sun Awareness For Educating
Today’s Youth). The SHADE Foundation is working in partnership
with The University of Texas M.D.Anderson Cancer Center’s
“Block Out Skin Cancer” initiative to bring S.A.F.E.T.Y.
to Arizona schools.It consists of a three-lesson skin cancer
awareness and prevention module that includes an interactive,
teacher-driven CD-ROM and 90-page Teacher’s Guide. |

| SHADE
Skin Cancer Prevention Initiative
The Center for Community-Based Research (CCBR)
at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a teaching affiliate of Harvard
Medical School, was awarded a $500,000 grant, over four years,
for the SHADE Skin Cancer Prevention Initiative. The initiative
will focus on (1) dissemination of policies and intervention
approaches to skin cancer and (2) development and evaluation
of current and new media approaches to communicate skin cancer
prevention messages to youth, young adults, and families.
CCBR will target:
- Community Outreach and Education
- School Programs
- Day Camps and Sports Programs
- Workplace

| Play Safe
in the Sun Puppet Show
The Arizona Cancer Center (University of
Arizona) developed the Play Safe in the Sun Puppet Show as
part of an interactive educational program to teach young
children (ages 4-8) about sun safety. To learn more about

| SHADE Poster
Contest
Blue Lizard, Walt Disney World®
Resorts, Infineon Raceway, Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Boston, these are but a few of the sponsors for the SHADE
Poster Contest for elementary schools. In 2005, contests were
held in Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada,
New England, New Hampshire, Northern California, Rhode Island,
Southern Florida and Vermont. Posters show ways to prevent
skin cancer and raise sun safety awareness. To see all of

Cancer Registry
The Arizona Cancer Center is working to revitalize
the Arizona Cancer Registry. The goal is to:
- Estimate the incidence of all primary
types of skin cancer in a defined area over multiple years.
- Evaluate long term and recent trends in
skin cancer incidence.
