The Girl Scouts - Arizona Cactus-Pine Council have recently added a new award patch for sun safety based on the principals of the SHADE Foundation. The new patch, the SHADE PATCH teaches girls how to be SunWise. Being SunWise is not just about painful sunburns and dehydration and heat stroke. Sun damage can lead to skin cancer.

Shonda also committed a $25,000 SHADE structure to be placed over the Girl Scout Camp Sombrero swimming pool in time for the summer. This award was due to a partnership with the Schillings and the United Way, Shonda will also help promote Girl Scout cookie sales.

DID YOU KNOW?

Because skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. The SHADE PATCH was created to develop responsible sun-safety attitudes.

The goal of the patch program is to help girls learn and apply appropriate sun safety behaviors that will help stop skin cancer, to know how to limit their time in the sun and yet still have fun. Through activities loaded with educational materials and fun-related projects the SHADE PATCH optimistically influences girls positively about the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation — and ultimately saving them from melanoma cancer. Girls, with the help of their leaders, can pick and choose which activities they want to work on from the many examples that are found in the Sun-Safety Kit. Working on the same activities with other girls in the Troop brings the girls closer together and is more enjoyable for all participants.

"Girl Scouts earning the SHADE PATCH will begin to understand the power and potential that lies within them," says Tamara Woodbury, Executive Director at Girl Scouts—Arizona Cactus-Pine Council. "Our goal is for all girls to grow strong and realize their own self-worth and to know how to maintain good health.”
