Why is Sun Safety Important?

While some exposure to sunlight can be enjoyable, too much can be dangerous. Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight can result in painful sunburn. It can also lead to more serious health effects like skin cancer, cataracts, and immune suppression. Children particularly need sun protection education since unprotected exposure to the sun during youth puts them at an increased lifetime risk for skin cancer.

Most people are not aware that skin cancer, while largely preventable, is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than one million cases per year.

Action Steps

By following these simple sun safety action steps, you can protect yourself from too much sun:

  • Do Not Burn
  • Avoid Sun Tanning and Tanning Beds
  • Generously Apply Sunscreen SPF 15+
  • Wear Protective Clothing Such as a Hat, Sunglasses and Full-Length Clothing
  • Seek Shade
  • Use Extra Caution Near Water, Snow and Sand
  • Watch for the UV Index - a forecast of UV intensity
  • Get Vitamin D Safely

SunWise Activities

Try out some of these free SunWise activities with your students. An hour or two of SunWise teaching a year has been shown to improve sun safety knowledge, attitudes and intended behavior in K-8 students. To learn more about SunWise, visit the EPA Web site or register above and click the box next to “Please sign me up for a free SunWise Tool Kit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.”
