RED SOX TO HOST "SUN AWARENESS WEEK" AT FENWAY PARK

Partnership includes Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Neutrogena, The Shade Foundation and the American Academy of Dermatology

BOSTON, MA--The Boston Red Sox will dedicate this week's homestand against the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies to providing fans with a greater understanding of the dangerous effects of prolonged sun exposure. The six-day campaign at Fenway Park is presented by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Neutrogena, and SHADE,The Curt and Shonda Schilling Melanoma Foundation of America.

The American Academy of Dermatology will also join the Red Sox and SHADE Wednesday to offer skin cancer screenings to Red Sox players and front office staff as part of a Major League Baseball initiative. Shonda Schilling, a melanoma survivor and founder of the SHADE Foundation, will be on hand for the event with Trinka Lowe, wife of Red Sox pitcher and melanoma survivor Derek Lowe.

The Red Sox will expand upon this one-day program to further educate the public about this health concern. Sun-safety messages will be presented throughout the ballpark, and Beth Israel Deaconness, Neutrogena, and SHADE will have a booth at Fenway Park during the week where they will distribute information to fans. Neutrogena sunscreen packets will also be handed out at the matinee games Thursday vs. Minnesota and Saturday and Sunday vs. Philadelphia.

"As an organization that has been touched by skin cancer more than once, we feel a special sense of duty to help educate our fans about sun safety as we head into the summer months," said Red Sox Executive Vice President/Public Affairs Dr. Charles Steinberg. "You can have fun in the sun while also protecting yourself. That's the message the Red Sox and our partners at Beth Israel Deaconess, Neutrogena and SHADE look forward to sharing this week."

"An important part of our mission is to educate people about the risks of sun exposure," said Dr. Robert Stern,Chief of Dermatology at Beth Israel Deaconess, the official hospital of the Boston Red Sox. "Fenway Park offers us a great way to get out the message that people need to be protectedwhile enjoying the outdoors."

"Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the United States and the incidence continues to rise," said Neutrogena Vice President of Dermatology Diane Foster. "Yet taking the appropriate steps to protect our skin from the sun's damaging rays could reduce the incidence dramatically. We at Neutrogena take sun protection very seriously, and we are delighted to partner with local dermatologists and the Boston Red Sox to educate people about effective sun protection during Skin Cancer Awareness Week at Fenway Park."

"Neutrogena is a worldwide leader in premium, dermatologist recommended skin, hair and cosmetic products," said Red Sox Director of Corporate Partnerships Joe Januszewski. "They have been providing consumers with health and beauty improvements for over 40 years."
