RED SOX TO HOST "SUN AWARENESS WEEK"
AT FENWAY PARK
Partnership includes Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center, Neutrogena, The Shade Foundation and the American Academy
of Dermatology

BOSTON, MA--The Boston Red
Sox will dedicate this week's homestand against the Minnesota Twins and
Philadelphia Phillies to providing fans with a greater understanding of
the dangerous effects of prolonged sun exposure. The six-day campaign
at Fenway Park is presented by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Neutrogena,
and SHADE,The Curt and Shonda Schilling Melanoma Foundation of America.
The American Academy of Dermatology will
also join the Red Sox and SHADE Wednesday to offer skin cancer screenings
to Red Sox players and front office staff as part of a Major League Baseball
initiative. Shonda Schilling, a melanoma survivor and founder of the SHADE
Foundation, will be on hand for the event with Trinka Lowe, wife of Red
Sox pitcher and melanoma survivor Derek Lowe.
The Red Sox will expand upon this one-day
program to further educate the public about this health concern. Sun-safety
messages will be presented throughout the ballpark, and Beth Israel Deaconness,
Neutrogena, and SHADE will have a booth at Fenway Park during the week
where they will distribute information to fans. Neutrogena sunscreen packets
will also be handed out at the matinee games Thursday vs. Minnesota and
Saturday and Sunday vs. Philadelphia.
"As an organization that has been touched
by skin cancer more than once, we feel a special sense of duty to help
educate our fans about sun safety as we head into the summer months,"
said Red Sox Executive Vice President/Public Affairs Dr. Charles Steinberg.
"You can have fun in the sun while also protecting yourself. That's
the message the Red Sox and our partners at Beth Israel Deaconess, Neutrogena
and SHADE look forward to sharing this week."
