Phoenix, Ariz. — The SHADE Foundation of America’s founder, Shonda Schilling, has been caught up in major league baseball's World Series these past several days, but she is also training hard for her own athletic achievement - the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon on January 9, 2005.

Shonda, along with runners from her SHADE Team, is training for the local race while raising funds for the SHADE Foundation. Funds raised will help establish an Arizona Family Melanoma Registry and provide shade coverings for school playgrounds. Shonda began the marathon program this year, and is hoping she and the SHADE Team members can raise $25,000. Her husband, Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, has offered to match all donations, dollar for dollar up to the goal of $25,000 for the SHADE Team.

Shonda, mother of four small children, founded the SHADE Foundation in 2002 after her successful battle against melanoma. The Shade Foundation is working to create sun-safety attitudes in society, especially in our youth. Developing responsible sun attitudes at an early age can eliminate the alarming statistics that continue to increase. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 1 million new cases diagnosed each year. Approximately 92,000 will be melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.

SHADE Team runners donate or raise $260.20 ($10 a mile) (race entry fee not included). Each person will receive a team shirt from Reebok, a training program for the final 10 weeks prior to the race, personalized coaching, advice from professionals, a Victory Party hosted by Shonda Schilling, and the fun experience of training with a team while supporting a charity.

“It’s an exciting time of the year as runners are now adding mileage and improving their endurance and strength,” said Alisa Tubbs, SHADE Team Coach. "Being part of a team like this provides additional inspiration to ensure they stick to a good program through the tough final several weeks of training, and cross the finish line happy, healthy, and knowing they have done a great thing for themselves, and for a great cause.”

The P.F. Chang's Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & 1/2 Marathon hosts its second running in the Valley of the Sun on Jan. 9, 2005. Participants are treated to more than 50 live bands along the courses, 40 high school cheerleading squads, and a finish line festival at Arizona State University. An evening concert at Tempe Town Lake completes the day. The inaugural event last year welcomed more than 29,000 runners and walkers, making it the largest first time annual running event in history.
