SHONDA SCHILLING RECEIVED THE PRESTIGIOUS SPEAKER THOMAS P. “TIP” O’NEILL AWARD.
SHADE Foundation Founder recognized nationally for her exemplary public service!

(May 4, 2004) Shonda Schilling, the Founder of SHADE - The Curt and Shonda Schilling Melanoma Foundation of America, received The Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr. Award on Wednesday, May 5th, 2004. The Greater Boston Federal Executive Board presented the 18th Annual award to Schilling for her ongoing commitment to public service during a luncheon at the John F. Kennedy Library in Dorchester, MA.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a leader in public service and to be among a list of distinguished people who have previously received the Speaker O’Neill award,” said Shonda Schilling. “I am looking forward to working with the great people in Massachusetts and throughout New England to promote sun-safety and to one day find a cure for ALS.”

Shonda Schilling, the wife of Boston Red Sox Pitcher Curt Schilling, is a survivor of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. She launched The SHADE Foundation (www.shadefoundation.org) in 2002 to promote sun-safety awareness to children and adults. Schilling, through SHADE, created a successful partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency to promote the SunWise school curriculum, teaching sun-safety education in classrooms. Her commitment to preventing skin cancer has reached a national audience through awareness programs and media exposure.

"I am very pleased to welcome Shonda Schilling to this event, and to our city, on behalf of the Federal community," said Robert W. Varney, Regional Administrator for the US EPA's New England Office and Chair of the government-wide awards committee. “Shonda Schilling’s extraordinary efforts to raise the awareness of Americans to the need to practice sun safety is inspiring. Her commitment will help countless people to enjoy outdoor activities while avoiding too much exposure to potentially harmful sunlight.”

Along with SHADE, Shonda Schilling is a national figure within the ALS Association, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. She has shown passion, courage, and commitment to the ALS community through fundraising, patient services and advocacy efforts since 1992.

Established in 1987 by the United States government, the Speaker O’Neill Award is presented to an individual who is an outstanding example of service to the American people with a national impact. The recipient is someone who captures the essence of Speaker O'Neill's life and consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to family, community, and America through selfless acts, philanthropy and other public service projects.

Past honorees include: David Powers, Special Assistant to President John F. Kennedy and JFK Library curator, President Jimmy Carter, Nancy Newman from the League of Women Voters, former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis and Senator George Mitchell.
