(September 15, 2003) SHADE- The Curt and Shonda Schilling Melanoma Foundation of America will be joining the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Paradise Valley Hospital on Saturday, September 20, 2003. SHADE Foundation founder and melanoma survivor, Shonda Schilling, will be attending the celebration to promote sun-safety with Head to Toe free skin cancer screenings for the community. Screenings will take place from 10:00AM to 12:00PM and are available on a first come first serve basis.

"The healthy living focus of the anniversary celebration will be a wonderful opportunity to educate people about skin cancer," said Shonda Schilling. “Vanguard Health Systems and Paradise Valley Hospital are playing an important role in the early detection and prevention of skin cancer throughout our community. We applaud them for their first 20 years and look forward to working with them in the future.”

Head to Toe is an exclusive partnership between the SHADE Foundation and Vanguard Health Systems, the parent company of Paradise Valley Hospital. Hundreds of people have attended the free screenings in the past year. Close to 50% of the individuals screened at Head to Toe screening were warned of potential skin cancers on their body and received information for further medical treatment. This statistic indicates the ongoing need for the free screenings and is a true testament to the success of the program.

According the American Cancer Society, one in five kids will grow up to develop skin cancer in their lifetime. The SHADE Foundation was founded in 2002 in the hopes of saving future generations from a potentially preventable skin cancer – melanoma. For the past 12 months and counting, the SHADE Foundation has been working hard to create sun-safety attitudes in society, especially in our youth.
