Prevention Research Partnerships

The SHADE Skin Cancer Prevention Initiative

The Center for Community Based Research at Dana-Farber has created the SHADE Skin Cancer Prevention Initiative dedicated to significantly lowering the incident rates of skin cancer in the United States. This initiative will focus on the following:

1. Dissemination of evidence-based policies and intervention approaches to skin cancer
2. Development and evaluation of current and new media approaches to communicate skin cancer prevention messages to youth, young adults, and families

CCBR and SHADE is poised to make a significant impact on skin cancer prevention. CCBR have multiple research projects poised to impact a growing number of populations, an expert and multidisciplinary faculty, collaborations with leading state and national organizations on skin cancer prevention, and nationwide focus and expertise on cancer prevention as the ultimate means of halting the spread of this devastating disease. All of these assets can be brought to bear on the issue of skin cancer prevention. The SHADE Skin Cancer Prevention Initiative Grant will enable CCBR to create a skin cancer prevention dissemination, research, and evaluation team within the Center for Community-Based Research (CCBR) at Dana-Farber. CCBR will combine efforts, internally as well with other institutions, to maximize skin cancer prevention outreach, develop behavior change models, and evaluate the efficacy of communication methods. These key investigators at Dana-Farber, include Karen Emmons, Ph.D., Vish Viswanath, Ph.D., Elizabeth Barbeau, Sc.D, Glorian Sorensen, Ph.D., MPH, and Mr. Alan Geller, MPH from Boston University.

The Task Force will also set priorities for the dissemination of skin cancer prevention strategies. An emphasis will be placed on prioritizing efforts that can have a large and sustainable community impact. All dissemination activities will include an evaluation component so that researchers at Dana-Farber can determine the impact of the activity and make changes if necessary.
