SunWise K-8 School Program

The SunWise ToolKit provides educators with a broad spectrum of class and individual projects to make learning about the dangers of the sun's rays interesting and fun.

The Tool Kit is free to registered schools. The Tool Kit consists of a variety of fun, developmentally appropriate activities that combine education about sun protection and the environment with other aspects of learning.

The Kit includes activities focusing on:
  • The science behind UV radiation and stratospheric ozone;
  • The health risks from overexposure to UV radiation; and
  • The steps you can take to protect yourself.

The Kit contains classroom activities for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 grade levels. In keeping with the intent of making these lessons hands-on and fun, the Kit also includes tools such as a UV-sensitive frisbee, and the On the Trail of the Missing Ozone comic book, which reinforce the sun safety lessons. Finally, to reward your students for their participation in the SunWise program, we have also created the easily photocopied Certificate of SunWisdom.

The Tool Kit contains an additional section targeting school policy, which gives guidance on how to institute sun safety changes outside the classroom. In addition, the Tool Kit is now available in Spanish.

Project S.A.F.E.T.Y.

Project S.A.F.E.T.Y. (Sun Awareness For Educating Today’s Youth)
www.mdanderson.org/projectsafety
The SHADE Foundation is working in partnership with The University of Texas M.D.Anderson Cancer Center’s “Block Out Skin Cancer” initiative to bring PS to Arizona schools in fall, 2004

Project S.A.F.E.T.Y. (Sun Awareness For Educating Today’s Youth) was developed by The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. It consists of a three-lesson skin cancer awareness and prevention module that includes an interactive, teacher-driven CD-ROM and 90-page Teacher’s Guide. Suitable for grades 4-12, the content is easily integrated into existing science and health curricula. Correlations with the National Science and Health Education standards are provided with each lesson.

Curriculum
The Project S.A.F.E.T.Y. CD-ROM curriculum is divided into three lessons that meet science and health curriculum goals for grades 4-9.

The CD-ROM is menu-driven, with access to the following features:

  • Animated graphics
  • Streaming video
  • Three discrete lessons
  • Optional activities
  • Extensive glossary

View Clips from the CD-ROM
NOTE: Best viewed on a PC with Internet Explorer 6.0 and the latest version of Windows Media Player.

The 85-page Teacher’s Guide complements the CD-ROM, and contains:

  • Lesson outlines and objectives
  • Expanded activities appropriate for elementary, middle or high school grade levels
  • Handouts designed for easy duplication
  • A glossary
  • Lesson content correlations with both the Arizona Academic Standards for Science and the National Education Standards for Science and Health.

Impact
Pre- and post-test results analysis conducted in 2002 demonstrated positive attitude and behavioral changes toward sun safety.

"Project S.A.F.E.T.Y. has been a huge success for my students and me. We live in the sunbelt and are part of a culture that still admires 'sun-tanned' skin...The 'ABCD' interactive activity was very effective in showing the many 'faces' of melanoma... Most students went from, 'I never wear sunscreen' to, 'I'll never step outside without wearing sunscreen!'"
