Screenings
- 2006/07 Arizona Skin Cancer Screening
Pilot Program
A free screening program specific to Arizona
will begin in 2006 to screen 1,000 individuals and collect and
analyze data. The screenings will utilize partnerships developed
with local dermatologists to conduct the screenings according
to the American Academy of Dermatology guidelines.
The pilot program for Arizona was developed
in response to the growing uninsured population in the State.
According to the US Census Bureau, one in five Arizonans do not
have health insurance and do not fall within levels to qualify
for the state sponsored health plan, AHCCCS. The evaluation will
help determine the treatment needs of the uninsured.
- 2006/07 Dana Farber Cancer Institute,
Blum Family Screening Van
SHADE Foundation of America has
given a grant to the Blum Family Screening Van to provide free
skin cancer screenings in Massachusetts and provide educational
materials to people at beaches. A program for lifeguards at public
beaches will also be initiated. A free screening will also be
held on SunWise Day at Fenway Park.
- 2006/07 Event Skin Cancer Screenings
In partnership with Blue Lizard
Australian Suncream, free skin cancer screenings will be conducted
at specified NASCAR venues, including Bristol Motor Speedway and
Infineon Raceway. Free screenings will also be held at baseball
spring training venues.
- Phoenix Women’s Expo
SHADE Foundation will again provide
free screenings at the 3TV Phoenix Women’s Expo which will
run for two days in the spring of 2007.
The Need for Skin Cancer Screenings
According to the 2004 Burden of Skin Diseases Report
prepared for the American Academy of Dermatology, in 2004, 7900
of the approximately 55,000 individuals newly diagnosed with melanoma
will die of their disease. Furthermore, the increase of incidences
has increased 690% from 1950 to 2001 and the overall mortality rate
has increased 165% in the same period. In addition to its high mortality
rate, melanoma is now the second leading cause of lost productive
work years due to cancer. According to the American Cancer Society,
early diagnosis is the most important factor in successful treatment
and they recommend annual skin examinations for everyone over the
age of 40 and every three years for individuals between the ages
of 20 and 40.
We Need Your Help
- Dermatologists
If you are a dermatologist we invite
you to participate by donating your valuable time to conduct skin
cancer screenings in your area. Please contact judy@shadefoundation.org.
We can coordinate the screening and help promote it.
Benefits of donating your time will be providing needed community
service, advertising, recognition on our website and monthly newsletter
and nomination in annual Rays of Hope Award.
- Sponsors
SHADE Foundation of America offers
sponsorship opportunities for skin cancer screenings. A sponsor
package can be tailored to meet specific needs. An example of
a sponsorship package may include:
A $2,500 sponsor for individual screenings
would receive signage at the screening, company literature for
distribution on site, recognition on website and in our monthly
newsletter.
Education and awareness is also an important part
of these free screenings. It takes a trained eye to spot a melanoma
in its early stage. But, you should also examine yourself regularly.
The best time to do this is after a bath or shower standing in front
of a full-length mirror. Use a hand mirror to help you see difficult
to reach areas. Contact your doctor at once if you see any odd-looking
moles. View

screenings or if you already have free screenings scheduled, we
will add your details to this page. Contact
