SHADE Cover Grant
Program: 2007-8
Once you have reviewed this section,
please email judy@shadefoundation.org
if you have any questions about the SHADE grant program.
The Federal Government now recognizes
solar radiation as a “known” carcinogen. The Center
for Disease Control has produced a document “Shade Planning
for America’s Schools” which calls to action anyone
involved in the education of our children to recognize the impact
that overexposure to the sun will produce.
Purpose
 |
The SHADE Cover Grant Program serves not only
as a measure to protect children from overexposure to the sun,
but also provides an educational tool for educators, parents
and students to learn why shade is so important. |
Program
The program is put forth to the public on the SHADE
Foundation website and is open to any 501 c 3 non-profit organization
who has need for outdoor shade. Applications for grants are open
once per year from September thru December. The grants are given
out in two cycles the following year in the Spring and Fall.
| Organizations requesting a shade grant must
also complete the Shade for America’s Schools Planning
Audit. This tool helps them determine where to put shade and
what type of shade would best serve their needs, based on the
time of day the area is utilized and the type of area to be
covered. A brochure explaining the shade audit is also available
on-line and every effort is made to help everyone easily understand
the process. |
 |
Grants are awarded based on compliance to the application
and shade audit, need and efforts made towards sun safety in general.
History
Over 100 SHADE Grants have been awarded since 2002.
The program originally conceived to provide incentives for schools
to participate in the EPA’s SunWise Program has evolved to
become a successful teaching method as well.
Parent, student, educator and administration input
is vital to bring a school from a passive participant in sun safety
education to the springboard for an active sun safe community.
Future
Each year we see more and more involvement from
communities, cities and even states to bring sun safety awareness
to children. Civic leaders who can effect widespread change are
going to be key in progressing to the next level. An excellent example
of this would be to have school board leaders and city planners
discussing plans for shade as budgets are created and new schools
built.
Other service organizations may want to step up
funding for shade covers on a local or national level. The American
Academy of Dermatologists is an example of a national organization
which provides numerous shade grants to schools via their local
dermatologist.

the ongoing work of these organizations to promote a sun safe message!
